More importantly the children totally love digging, piling and building sand buildings.
There is no shortage of different children's sandboxes available on the market. It is important to pay special attention to the safety features and the specific accessories, but they hardly every think about the sand they should buy.
It is important to figure the volume of the sandbox you have have. It should say in the manual how much sand is needed to fill the sandbox. It is always a good idea to get some additional bags just to be on the safe side. The sand is easily spilled around during play time. Plus it sticks to the shoes and toys so you can expect it to disappear from the sandbox gradually. It is essential for you to store the bags in a dry place.
The quality of the sand you buy is extremely important. Unfortunately many of the products offered on the market are made from crushed stones. It is fairly easy to find sand that is safe and specifically designed for a kids sandbox, many garden and building centers have 40 pound bags of play sand. Most typically you'll have your choice of white play sand or white. If you watch for sales it's not hard to get it for as little as a dollar or two a bag. Since it's so cheap I would recommend getting extra. Kids have a tendency to make the sand disappear or to actually take some of the sand out to play with it. At least my kids do.
