Is Computer Technology Harming Our Children's Social Skills? Sunday, October 31, 2010

Recent studies highlight our children are becoming super skilled when it comes to finding their way around a computer, but less proficient at social skills such as making new friends, knowing what to say in certain social situations, and so on.

Hardly surprising, considering that from as early as the late seventies we have all been obsessed with teaching our kids how to use their computers efficiently and how to navigate the web, so they would not be left behind in the techno race for supremacy, as it were. By the nineties we all accepted that, if our children were to make any real progress in life, they must be at ease with a computer mouse and keyboard.

To some extent, this it true. Nowadays it is unacceptable for any school leaver to be unskilled in computer technology. Some have only basic knowledge but enough to get by in a world run by computers. It does seem a pity, however, that we have neglected our children´s other social skills so woefully.

Many young adults have very little confidence in their own abilities to enter into social situations. So many spend their social time glued to a computer screen in their leisure time, they have been rendered socially inept in just about every other respect. A surprising number of teenagers are unable to comprehend a section of society that are unskilled in computer technology and would be unable to interact with such people.

It is important that responsible parents and teachers promote social skills in your people, to prepare them for adult sociability. Parents have as great a role to play as teachers. Teach your child to answer a telephone politely and correctly. Give your child some basic information to ease their journey into maturity; tell them how to address someone formally as well as informally, it cannot harm them to know these things and one day they might value their own ability to be comfortable at any social level.

By all means, encourage your child to be a whiz on a keyboard, but don´t allow them to neglect other areas of social behaviour.

Choosing a Girl's Sleeping Bag - Fashion Or Practical Saturday, October 30, 2010

A sleeping bag is a necessity for any little girl. And that's why you've got to make sure it's the right one! Good children's sleeping bags aren't always easy to come by, but when you find one, it can last for years. Whether she's going to her best friend's slumber party or she just wants to "camp out" in the living room, at the end of the night she's going to want to be comfy and cozy. But just like any other accessory kids are looking for something that is just as fun as it is useful. Here are three things that will help you find the perfect sleeping bag for your little adventurer.

1. Make sure it's comfortable. It may be the cutest design you've ever seen, but if she can't get a good night's sleep in it, forget about it! Look for soft fabrics like cotton or fleece when picking out a sleeping bag. It may be helpful to take a look at what material her favorite clothes are made of since each child has different tastes. It's also smart to think about where she will need to use it most. Indoor sleeping bags are the way to go unless your family camps a lot. Outdoor sleeping bags are made for much colder weather conditions and chances are she'll get too warm when using anywhere else.

2. Make sure it's durable. A child's sleeping bag has to be able to withstand some rough treatment. So try to find a durable sleeping bag that will be able to grow with your child. A machine washable bag will be much easier to keep and reuse no matter where she takes it. And the easier it is to carry the better. Travel bags and elastic straps will help her pack up quickly on her own, which means that she'll like taking it even more. There are even some sleeping bags that fit in a special backpack. It doesn't get much easier than that!

3. Make it stylish. Just because a sleeping bag is comfortable and durable, doesn't mean it has kid-appeal. A unique bag that expresses her interests will be a sure-fire hit. And thankfully, you don't have to sacrifice quality to find them! Companies like Fireside Comforts, Wildkins and Bazoongi Kids all produce bags that are stylish and well tailored. You can find great designs for horses, dancers, butterflies, and, of course, princesses. There are also wonderful colored patterns and designs for parents who are looking to get a little more mileage out of the slumber bag.

Mountain Biking - Five-Point Rule When Riding Downhill Friday, October 29, 2010

Riding downhill is more than likely the most exciting area of mountain biking. But this doesn't imply you must ride hard like there is no tomorrow. There might be a large difference between delighting in wiping out. Take these 5 simple advices to ride down the hill intact as opposed to spending the rest of your day in the hospital.

1. Pre-ride preparation C Even if you're physically ready and capable to ride downhill, not ever attempt it if you haven't checked your bike. Check if you have the right set of brakes and if it works properly. Do remember though to wear your trusted helmet, a pair of gloves, and pads if available.

2. Keep it balanced C As you move downhill, shift your body weight as far back on the saddle as feasible to counter the angle of descent. If you feel that the front end of the bike wobbles or you are losing control, you might appear to be too far back. Compensate it by leaning forward until you get the proper control. Keep your body the right way aligned on with your bike. Bend down and hold your system as close to the bike as potential. Bend your arms and legs. They enjoy best shock absorbers particularly when the trail is very rough and rutted. The bike is harder to operate with stiff body. Relax your muscles and do not grip the handlebar too tightly.

3. Pick a line and stay on it CSurprisingly picking a spot that you like to steer clear of, pick a line where you like to go. Make you unwell that you align your front tube towards that direction. Scan your path up-front for feasible hazards and ready your next action. Planning is essential. It will keep your feet on the pedal and your hands on the handlebar. When scanning, look 15 to 20 feet ahead. Then align your tire towards or away from that direction. Do this throughout your descent.

Even if you have a good set of suspension, try to opt for the smoothest path possible. A less rugged path provides you with better control of the bike and less body pain after the ride.

4. Keep your feelings complete C Not even aware get carried away with the adrenaline rush. While you can go wild and get crazy, keep your head focused on the direction of your bike. Resign from, lack of concentration for a brief moment can speed a disaster and can send you rolling down the hill ahead of your bike. Always play it safe but nonetheless having fun.

5. Control your speed C Sure, you would like to feel the wind brushing your face. That is just part of the thrill. But do not substitute wind with mud or rocks. If you like to free the brake during descent, it is entirely up to but make sure that you have an entire control over your bike. If fear starts to substitute the thrills, better consider slowing. Not conscious of the fact hit the brake hard though. Gently squeeze both front and rear brake to get to the sought after speed.

We go through for other bikers or unsuspecting hiker ahead of you. You may be riding down too fast and may hit one other person. This doesn't mean that you ought not to go fast, it only means you must manage your speed.

Helping Your Baby Sleep Longer Wednesday, October 27, 2010

People of all ages will greatly benefit from a good night of sleep. However, infants need much more sleep than adults as their bodies are in the early development phase. Infants who do not get adequate sleep may become cranky for long periods of the day which will likely raise the stress levels of other members of the family. It's crucial to encourage your child to sleep enough throughout the night and day. When away from home you can try a good quality stroller that falls within your budget, as long as it has extra suspension for a smoother ride.

Don't worry too much if you feel your child has developed erratic sleeping patterns. Most newborns are not used to having the same sleep schedule as you so it will take a while for them to adapt. Additionally, they need to eat every few hours so they might be waking merely because of hunger. Your doctor will give you additional guidance on how often your child should have to eat. Just be aware that this will affect their sleeping schedule at a young age.

Signs Of Sleep Troubles In Your Child

There are some indications that you can look for that will tell you that your baby is struggling with their sleeping. The most typical is night waking where they will wake up many times throughout the night, which is a tough thing for any parent to cope with. Another thing that can become a problem is their troubles falling asleep, or just relaxing in general. If it isn't consistently happening they might be struggling with gas. If you are giving them formula they might not be digesting it very well so you can try a couple different brands to see which one works for them.

Another common occurrence when they are sleeping is nightmares. As a young child becomes more aware of their surroundings they tend to start dreaming, but this could happen when they are quite young. It's important to ease their fears and help them get back to sleep so they don't become afraid of sleeping. That would be the time when it becomes a much bigger problem. It is estimated that in excess of 20 percent of children experience this in their young life.

Just remember that babies spend more time in sleep than awake before they turn one. Sleep plays an extremely important part of their overall health and development so you must encourage proper sleeping habits from early on. This will include when you're away or at home. Luckily there are several great baby products like strollers which can enable your little one to completely rest while you're out walking around. Both you and your child will be thankful that they were able to nap during the ride.

For more information on the many brands of baby strollers like Joovy, Baby Trend, Graco, and Maclaren visit totalbabystrollers.com. You can find reviews and ratings to help you with your decision.

Help Build Your Partner's Self Esteem Tuesday, October 26, 2010

As partners in life, couples have an obligation to help each other out. The same is also true when considering psychological matters. This is the reason why it is important that a person strives to help their partner improve their self-pride.

Helping your partner improve their self-esteem is one of the best ways for you to express your passion for him or her. Your are not only doing him a favor when you boost his or her self-pride, you are also contributing to the longevity of your relationship. For a relationship to work out, both partners should be emotionally and psychologically mature. A nutritious self-image or self-pride is probably one of the indications of maturity.

Below are some tips that you are able to do to help your mate improve his or her self-esteem.

Acknowledge that nobody is perfect.

Remember that nobody is perfect. So do not expect yourself or your partner to be one. Instead, believe that any body has the ability to change. So whatever is the on-going state of your partner at once, realize that he/she can still improve on their situation.

It is in addition essential that you accept your partner for what he/she is. Never, ever inform your partner that you wish he or she is someone different. This may have a very damaging effect on their self-pride. A control that would take a lot of time and effort to mend. If you actually love your partner you will accept him or her for what they is. This includes her flaws and shortcomings.

Do not be stingy on praises and compliments

If your better half has done or accomplished something that is praiseworthy then proceed and praise or compliment him or her for it. To be most effective, you must give your partner a compliment at least once everyday. Even small compliments would a great deal. As an example, you can tell your partner how good they looks in her workplace attire before he or she goes to work or how you like the smell of their new cologne water.

Giving compliments would not just do wonders for your partner's self-esteem; it could easily bring magic to your relationship.

Avoid harsh criticisms

Paying compliments doesn't indicate that you need to lie. It does not help for your mate's self-pride, to be brutally frankly either. If you do not really like what he or she is wearing, then tell them that you like the one he or she wore last week better in place of telling him or her that that what he or she is wearing sucks.

Listen! Listen! Listen!

Good constant communication is one of the secrets of a lasting relationship. And in communication it is as equally essential to listen as it is to talk. Be your mate's most attentive audience. Whenever he/she is saying something, give him or her your full attention. Knowing that you are listening attentively to him would boost his or her confidence and would increase their self-esteem.

By doing the things above, you can serve your mate increase their self-esteem. After helping your partner build a powerful self-pride, you will also recognize that your relationship will also improve. So take a break to these things at this moment.

5 Types Of Children's Furniture Every Nursery Needs Sunday, October 24, 2010

Children's furniture comes in a range of different styles, shapes, and sizes and there's furniture for kids of every age right up to teenage years. For the baby's nursery there are some items that you need to consider essential and there are also a number of less essential but more luxurious items that you might want to consider adding to the room too. The crib or bassinette is a definite must have, and a dresser provides much needed storage space. You can also enjoy some storage space and masses of convenience with a dedicated changing table while every nursery should be beautifully decorated from top to bottom.

1 - The Crib

A lot of parents choose cribs because they are stable and bulky items. They are the closest option to a bed without having to rely on your son or daughter being able to get in and out and move around in a bed without falling or rolling out and hurting themselves. Modern cribs can add extra functionality by including a changing table at the side; something that modern equivalents of classical designs may also include. Choose from a selection of colors and designs to ensure that it matches the style of the nursery.

2 - The Bassinette

A bassinette is smaller and has lower sides. It is often used by parents that want their baby to sleep in their bedroom because it puts baby at eye level in a compact and lightweight baby bed. However, a bassinette can also be used in a nursery and can prove especially useful if space is at a premium in the room. A bassinette can also be moved from room to room and even floor to floor relatively easily because it is light and maneuverable.

3 - The Dresser

Storage space is important in every room from the kitchen to the bedroom, and also in the nursery. Most families will inundate baby and parents with gifts that include vests, clothes, and comfort toys and these will all need a home. You may have spare storage space in your own bedroom but with a nursery dresser you can rely on using children's furniture and leave your own free for your stuff. Nursery dressers can be classic and stylish or modern and contemporary in their look and their design.

4 - The Changing Table

A changing table is not only functional and useful but can provide you with a means to change baby's diaper and get them dressed or undressed without having to lean over or crouch on the floor. Changing tables may also provide some extra storage space where you can keep diapers, vests, wipes, and other items.

5 - The Wall Art

Wall art may not be considered a critical aspect of children's furniture but it is certainly a desirable one. It provides you and your child with something to look at, and if you're showing off baby to friends and family then there's nothing wrong with letting them see a stylish, modern, and beautiful looking nursery in which baby sleeps.

With children's furniture ranging from beautiful wall art to functional and good looking nursery dressers, My Urban Child is a leading online supplier of quality kids furniture and accessories.

Choosing the Best Video Projector Thursday, October 21, 2010

Projectors are becoming more advanced nowadays. It has become an essential tool for many businesses. It is helpful for personal needs also. There are several types of projectors depending on its purpose and features. A video projector is one of the popular types. Video projectors also come with different types and models.

Just like any office productivity equipment, video projectors have certain features which you need to know in order to help you decide on which one to buy. Video projectors may differ in terms of its type, lamps, brightness, lens and resolution.

Basically, video projectors are categorized into three. It can be a conference room, ultra-light or fixed installation projector.

Conference Room Video Projectors
If you are going to use the projector for your conference rooms, it is best to choose the not too heavy models but with better performance. Conference room projectors are brighter and adjustable for large rooms than other types of video projectors. Some models include additional accessories such as a computer, laser pointer and many other features.

Ultra-light Video Projectors
Nowadays, portability is among the major demands of many business professionals and sales person who use presentations anywhere possible for business clients or associates. In this case, an ultra-portable projector is ideal for such purposes. As the demand for portable products increased, many projector manufacturers are providing smaller and lighter models almost every year. Latest models even weigh less than three pounds.

Micro-portable versions of these projectors have also been available.
Ultra-lights are designed primarily for mobile business individuals. Many of the portable types even surpass its larger variants in terms of features and brightness. If you are planning to purchase this type of video projector, remember to consider the weight of the product including all its accessories such as cables, remote control and the case. This is very important since you are mostly carrying the device during frequent travels.
Fixed Installation Video Projector

This is the most versatile and powerful projectors. It is also the most expensive variant. It is usually installed in permanent locations. They are purposely designed for large areas such as auditoriums and other similar places. These projectors weigh around 100 pounds. It can also be found installed in the entertainment room of big houses.

A fixed installation projector is capable of handling different resolutions and images. Most models of this type come with complete accessories.
After deciding on what type of video projector best suits your needs, there are other factors that you must consider in purchasing the best projector.
It is vital to get a model which produces the highest quality since projectors are used mainly for presentations. The projection of images of these devices depends on three aspects such as the brightness, type of lamp used and the projection surface.

If the brightness of your projector is not sufficient, it will tend to blur the images. The brightness is measured in terms of ANSI lumens. For ultra-light projectors, the most ideal is around 1,000 lumens while for larger rooms like conference halls should at least be 4,000 lumens. Fixed installation projectors should be 10,000 lumens.

The most ideal surfaces are to use screens rather than walls. Screens produce better quality images. The best background for screens is either white or gray.

The lamp type is the main factor in producing brightness. The most commonly used lamps are the Ultra High Efficiency (UHE) and the Ultra High Performance (UHP). It is common for the lamps to die around 1,000 to 4,000 hours of usage.

It is best to choose lamps with lower wattage since they are more economical and will last longer. Some of the projectors come with an economy mode feature which greatly helps in prolonging the lifespan of the lamp.

Bad Dad- Part 2 Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Nicks POV My heart dropped and I slowly made my way over to them. Nick- why does she think that? Kevin- are you serious nick?!? You dont spend time with them, youre not there when they have a bad dream, or need help with school, youre never there. Shes seven, she doesnt understand that you have to work!! Shelley called me today, wanna know why? Because your children want to learn how to play the guitar, but you arent there to teach them. I sighed and unbuckled my belt, then dropped my pants. Dad pulled me over his lap and started raining down spanks over my boxer covered backside. It lasted for five minutes and I started crying, I used to be able to last for twenty minutes of dads hand, not anymore. Dad pulled me up, picked up my belt and pointed to the edge of the couch, I nodded and went over to the side, I layed over the side and dad took his stance next to me. Kevin walked out. SMACK! Nick-ouchh! SMACK SMACK SMACK SMACK SMACK Nick- dad, Im sorry!!! SMACK SMACK SMACK SMACK. I had gone limp and I just cried and buried my face in my arms. Dad pulled me up and wrapped his arms around me. Mr J- you need to fix what youve created. I nodded and let go of him, I pulled up my pants and did up my belt, then walked out of the room. The first room I got to was my sons, I knocked on the door and he didnt answer. I heard a groan, so I opened the door. Matt was on his bed and he was ripping up a piece of paper, the guitar was sitting on the floor. Nick- hey buddy, whats up? He ...

You, The Camping Television Star! Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Did you ever think that you knew so much about camping that you could teach the world? Have you ever thought that you would like to share your own camping experiences with others? You just might be the person to do that. And, imagine having your own experiences and advice to be aired right on Time Warner and on Cablevision. Have you thought of that?

So many times I have thought of that yet, I have not really put together an in-depth camping show. Yet, that might be in the making for this coming season. But this article is not really about the shows or about seeing camping things on television. This article is just a helpful hints article, giving you a few more ideas about camping. By reading here, you just might find some extra insights, some extra ideas, and thoughtful helpful hints about the subject of camping.

These ideas or suggestions might make your camping experience more joyful and less work:

Two of the most important tenting helpful hints that I can share are these:

1. Never leave a tent unattended that has not been staked down. I've had the experience of leaving a large tent [seven feet high at the center] literally fly away after I moved about six inches from the tent to grab the stakes. The tent was completely put together-with the fly attached, and in one split second, on a day that had 'no' wind, a slight breeze came by and grabbed the tent up into the air.

I was surprised to see such a large tent fly away. If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't have believed it possible. After all, how many of us have tried to get little kites up into the air with not much success? And here is this seven foot tent flying by.

I chased the tent [it flew OVER a fence] and brought it back to my campsite, and started all over. This time I kept a hold of the tent until I had put one stake in the ground and anchored it to the tent.

Now I know how some people get little holes in their tents [They've probably retrieved the tents over sharp fences while the tent was flying away].

So, number one, hold onto that tent until it's properly secured to the ground.

2. Never bring food inside your tent. Food attracts animals. You and your tent will be safe if you don't bring your food or snacks inside your tent.

If you are camping at Hecksher State Park, always bring some way to lock your tent. It has been my experience that while I was away from the tent, some little children, not related to me or my family, were experimenting and exploring inside of my tent while I was gone. How did I discover this? I came back and caught them coming out of my tent. Luckily, nothing of value was taken or broken. But what was broken was my seal against insects. While these children were inside the tent, they came in , left the tent door unsealed and thus let in some insects from the outside. So when camping at Hecksher or other somewhat more crowded campgrounds, bring something to lock your tent. This way when little ones are wandering around the campsite, they cannot enter your tent. You can lock the tent by using cable ties or by using luggage padlocks or by using string and knots. String and knots you say? Yes. A string, knotted might do the case where you have young toddlers or babies wandering around. Tie the knot at the top and the young ones cannot simply bend over and unzip the tent. Personally , I like the cable tie idea. This secures your tent and you will know for sure if anyone has been in your tent while you were away.

Why lock? The reasons are obvious. You are locking to secure your tent from insects, from spiders, and from all sorts of wild animals. Uninvited animals will wander into tents that are left open. And, uninvited children will wander in also. You do not leave any valuables inside your tent, so you are not locking valuables. That is why string or cable ties will work just as well as luggage locks. So that is just one more camping idea.

Where did you buy your tent or where will you buy your tent?

Some of the best places to buy good tents are close to you. Try these: Sports Authority Target Walmart or online at eBay.com Usually in the off-season, you can get great camping buys on tents and other items in a store called, Target. Just one note about that though. If you buy a sleeping bag at Target, open it up in parking lot just to check it. Once I bought a seventy dollar sleeping bag there and opened it up to find hair and a pretzel inside the bag. Yet the box looked as if it had not been opened and it was totally sealed with thick tape. So open your sleeping bag before you get home, just in case you need to exchange the item.

I'd steer clear of the children's pop-up tents. These seem harder to fold up than the larger regular tents. Sure, the tent pops open very quickly. But after that you can spend as much as thirty minutes trying to figure out how to pop it down and fold it up to put it back into its' carry bag. A regular child's or adult's tent can be just as cheap if you search around for the best buy or if you wait until 'off-season" to purchase your tents.

For serious campers, and those who will be camping out for the rest of their lives, I recommend EUREKA tents. These are wonderfully, beautifully-created tents that will make you smile. They are almost easily set up. And most of them will have that nice material floor instead of that hard crinkley floor that most other tents have.

Eureka tents are all material and no plastic. That makes a difference in your camping experience.Eureka tents can be expensive. But if you purchase off-season, you can get as much as fifty percent off the original price of a Eureka tent. And, the tents are brand new , not used.In my next article about camping, I will give you a list of some essential camping items and offer some other suggestions about camping.

Now, what about being a television star? How do you do that. You begin at the first stage of television. Have your program aired on Time Warner. Everyone has heard of Time Warner and once you are head on TW, your journey begins. Leave a note if you are interested in talking about camping in an audience.

I created this article on May 26, 2008.

Save Space With a Space Saving And Comfortable Inflatable Sofa Bed Monday, October 18, 2010

The inflatable sofa bed is a hybrid inflatable bed that can assume five roles in one structure. It can be used as a bed, a recliner, a sofa, a queen size bed and a booster bed. This extends the utility of this fixture. It can be pumped in a minute and can easily be set up in accordance to the desired use. It can be used for indoors and outdoors and is made usually from heavy duty PVC making it strong enough to resist punctures from rough surfaces. This can be used as a seating outside and inside the house and because of the air that is acting as its cushion it is very comfortable to sit and lie on. Most of these have several individual air pockets that make it able to handle great weights without losing its form and provided comfort.

This can also be used as a camping bed and when the bonfire is starting to burn you can use it to accommodate yourself into a very nice cushioned seating. The inflatable sofa bed is a very versatile bed fixture that you can buy and use to the brim. It can be very easy to maintain and cost less than a couch or bed combined.

7 Steps Dealing With Aggressive Children Sunday, October 17, 2010

Here's a simple 7 Step by Step system that you can start using to deal with your aggressive children.

STEP 1: MODEL APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

Children, during their childhood stages are very vulnerable to negative influences. They tend to imitate what they see, what they hear and what they experience. A bad experience may also lead to them always remembering the incident. Also, aggressive discipline will result in aggressive behavior in the children towards other children and even the parent. Remember, don't do anything negative that you wouldn't want your children to imitate you in front of them.

STEP 2: HOUSE INSPECTION

Remember to always inspect your house for possible aggression traps. Is there enough room for your children to play together and independently? Are there enough materials for each child to interact with?

Does each child receive an equal amount of positive attention from the parent or caregiver?

STEP 3: TEACH YOUR CHILD CONTROL EARLY

As soon as your child throws the first temper tantrum, begin to talk about different situations and the
emotions they evoke.

You can say things like, "It's OK to be angry when your tower falls, but throwing blocks is not nice. Try again.

Mommy doesn't like biting. Biting hurts. Hitting is not nice. Please don't use your hands that way."

Use a firm voice but avoid yelling. Yelling is also a form of aggression, in which your child might imitate your actions.

STEP 4: INTERVENE IMMEDIATELY

Whenever your child becomes aggressive towards others or towards his or her own body, have a time out period. This is for you and them to calm down before discussing the behavior and alternative behaviors in which you can solve the problems with the current situation.

STEP 5: FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION ON THE HURT CHILD

Even negative attention will reinforce aggressive behavior. Put the aggressor in time out, walk away, and
comfort the hurt child. When the aggressor leaves time out with your permission, have him or her do something nice for the hurt child, such as giving a favorite blanket or toy.

STEP 6: TEACH THEM TO BE ASSERTIVE

Teach your children to be assertive and ask for what they want instead of being aggressive and demanding.

When your child screams and throws an empty juice cup across the room, say, "Do you want more juice? All you have to do is say, 'Mommy, can I have more juice?' and I will get it."

STEP 7: ROLE-PLAY WITH OLDER CHILDREN

Make a list of scenarios and ways to ask for things such as snacks, money or free time. Talk openly with
your child about feelings and emotions. Discuss different possible responses or refer to the list every
time your child uses aggression.

I hope these 7 simple steps will give you a better idea of a step by step system how you can deal with an aggressive children.

Pros and Cons of Using Sign Language with Your Toddler Saturday, October 16, 2010

"Are you teaching your baby to sign?", "Are you going to use sign language with your baby?", "My baby knows over 50 signs already, and she's only 10 months! Are you teaching Evalee sign language?". These are just a few examples of what I was subjected to when I was pregnant and after I had my daughter Evalee. Honestly, I didn't know there was such as thing as baby sign language until I got pregnant. The idea sounded intriguing... so I did some research and purchased a few books. I have "Baby Sign Language Basics, Early Communication for Hearing Babies & Toddlers" by Monta Z. Briant, "Teach Your Tot to Sign - The Parent's Guide to American Sign Language" by Stacy A. Thompson and the children's board book "My First Signs" by Annie Kubler. I thumbed through them a bit before she was born and started to use some basic signs like milk, more, eat & sleep when she was around 6 months or so. Evalee really took to the board book with its wonderful illustrations. If I had to recommend one book that would be it.

Evalee is now 19 months and uses only a few signs. Her catalog consists of milk, more, eat, cookie, out, mommy, dog, book, water, please & thank you. I was excited about it at first, to be able to communicate with her as early as 10 or 11 months was great. Lately I've been questioning my decision to teach her sign. I realize all kids develop at their own speed but she isn't talking as much as her peers. She seems to rely on the signs a lot, so much so that I have yet to hear her say "Mommy". Otherwise, she points and grunts. This may be a result of being home with me all the time and not in daycare or around other toddlers much. I try to set up play dates, but it doesn't happen as often as I would like. I'm not necessarily worried or concerned, I know her hearing is perfect, it would just be nice to hear "Mommy". Is that selfish?

I remember speaking with a friend a while back about her daughter who was a few months old at the time and asked if they were considering using sign and she said no. Her reason being that a member of her family used sign language with their child, who was over 2, and she wasn't speaking much at all. The funny thing is, all advocates of baby sign language argue that babies are prone to talking sooner when exposed to sign language, which was one of my main reasons for teaching Evalee to sign.

On the flip side, both my brother-in-law and cousin-in-law have used sign with their children and both kids are speaking really well for their age. Sarah will be 2 in March and speaks very well and Carson is 2 & a half and you can have a full conversation with him. Who knows, right?

Overall, I'm glad I have some signs as a means of communicating with Evalee and I have to say she is developing by leaps and bounds in other areas, her physicality is amazing. I would love to hear from other parents about their experience with this...

Sleeper Chair - A Great Way to Add Extra Sleeping Space Thursday, October 14, 2010

A sleeper chair is a great alternative to a sleeper sofa when you need extra sleeping space, but don't have very much floor space. A sleeper chair is a (usually) upholstered chair that folds out to make a twin or double-sized bed. It's a perfect choice for small apartments or kids' rooms.

The simplest form of sleeper chair is for children. It's usually a low-slung chair constructed of foam with a colorful cloth covering. Each square chunk of foam is connected by cloth to the others, and it all folds up into a chair shape. When extra sleeping or game-playing room is needed, the chair seat simply folds out flat onto the floor and the games begin!

There are larger versions of this chair for adults, and these can be great pieces to place in extra bedrooms or any other place that doesn't get heavy usage. The foam sleeper chairs are inexpensive, so even if one wears our or gets damaged, it won't put a dent in your wallet to replace it.

But sometimes adults want something a little more substantial. For instance, if you live in a small dorm or apartment, you don't have an extra bedroom, but you still want to accommodate overnight guests from time to time. Investing in a good-quality sleeper chair is a perfect answer.

Sleeper chairs are manufactured by some of the best-known names in the furniture business. They have hardwood construction, a wide selection of beautiful upholstery fabrics, and many also have adjustable headrests or backrests for watching television. Prices can range from under one hundred dollars for the children's foam version to over a thousand dollars for a high-quality sleeper chair with designer upholstery fabric.

You can purchase a good-quality sleeper chair in a fabric color or pattern that enhances your décor, and the chair will fit in perfectly to your decorating scheme. It will be comfortable to sit on, but when the need arises it can transform into an extra bed. Sleeper chairs are also available with leather coverings in a variety of colors, so if you purchased a leather sofa, you can now accessorize it.

When choosing a sleeper chair to be used as furniture, lie down on the mattress. This is a critical step. You wouldn't choose a mattress for your bed without trying it out, and the same rule applies here. Especially if you're planning to spend a fair amount of money on this piece of furniture, you want to be sure the mattress will hold up and be comfortable. Also, are replacement mattresses available, or is the mattress an integral part of the sleeper chair that can't be taken out?

Is the fabric sewn well? Look at the samples in the showroom. Are patterns matched up? Look for gaps in the seams, where attention to detail might have slipped. If there's a mechanism for the mattress, does it fold out smoothly, with no squeaking or snags? Is fabric protection available? If you don't want to apply this yourself, it's a good idea to have the dealer apply it, especially for a higher-end furniture purchase. You'll want to protect that investment.

And if you're thinking about that bar across your back that used to keep you up nights, worry no more. Sleeper chairs are now available with unique designs that eliminate that metal bar. Solid wood supports or the newer, more supportive foam mattresses can make that nightmare a thing of the past.

So get your home ready for the holidays or just the occasional extra overnight guest by checking out a sleeper chair today!

Finding Treatment For Infertility Tuesday, October 12, 2010

There's a huge distinction between not wanting to have children and not being able to have them. Some ladies make the selection not to have a family in this way, but they could if they desire to. Even so, understanding that you can't have kids is usually one from the hardest things a woman has to face. Infertility is really typical, but the word can be a tiny misleading. Because Grandma Can Monday, October 11, 2010

Have your grandchildren ever spent the night with their grandmother? Did you enjoy having them? Did you know what to feed them? Did you know what to play with them? If you have answered yes or not to any of these questions, read on.

When we become grandmothers the world of childcare changes drastically. The everyday routine of making sure our children are fed, clean and ready for school is gone. Now we can enjoy our grandchildren and spoil them just a little bit.

My daughter in law picked me and my sister in law up from the train station. She brought along my two grandsons one is age (1) one and the other is (5) five. I was happy to see them even if it was for the short trip from the train station to my home.

When the phone rang at nine o'clock the same evening I was surprised it was my five year old grandson. He was asking to come to my house. After I spoke with his mother I found out he was being a real pest at home and was interfering with a special project at home.

My daughter (his aunt) went to pick him up and bring him to his first overnight visit with his delighted grandmother.

In he bounced in my small house with a huge smile which lit up his big face and big brown eyes. He carried a small overnight bag and a Spider Man sleeping bag. Plus he was splattered on his face, arms and legs with different colored paint.

Somehow, it became the job of my sister in law (his great aunt) to pump up his sleeping bag. His aunt and great aunt each slept on a couch in the living room that night and my grandson slept in his sleeping bag on the floor. During the night five times sleeping bag tipped over and each time it happened laughter echoed around the room.

In the morning I wanted to feed my grandson. I offered him milk. He did not like my milk. I offered him toast. He took one bite and did not like my bread. I offered him cereal but of course he did not like my cereal.

What to do. I cut up an apple along with a bowel of pretzels and a soft drink. Only a grandmother could get away with that food combination for breakfast for their grandchild.

Where can a child go to sleep covered in paint and eat such an enticing breakfast. When it was time for me to take him home he needed to be strapped into his booster seat. He managed to strap himself in correctly. But of course his great aunt checked to make sure it was correctly fastened.

This is the suggestions from his grandmother and great aunt.

(1) Read to your children or grandchildren for as long as they will listen and sit still.

(2) Carry them as long as you can so they feel safe.

(3) Cuddle, cuddle, and cuddle.

(4) Kiss, Kiss and more kisses.

(5) Hug, hug, and more hugs.

(6) Only tell them "NO" unless they really need it.

(7) Get down on the floor and play with them without considering how you are going to get up.

(8) Observe your grandchildren when they play, eat and interact with their siblings and other children.

Just love your children and grandchildren. Love is free and we need to show it more often. Thank you for reading this article. Please feel free to read any of my other numerous articles on various subjects.

Afraid of Heights? Choose Low Loft Bunk Beds Saturday, October 9, 2010

A bunk bed is a favorite classic in any children's bedroom. Who wouldn't want this charming piece of furniture? Little kids love the idea of climbing up and down the ladders to their private sleeping quarters. It's like their military tower camp at night where they can spy incoming intruders. Or, their castle tower to ward off would-be taking over siblings. Bunk beds can really be exciting and can spice up a child's imagination.

However, parents do worry about their child's safety being in the top bunk. Chances of rolling over while they are sleeping can still be great despite the presence of attached railings. So, if parents still want their kids to stay in this bed minus the risk of falling over from a high spot, they can forgo with low-loft bunk beds.

Low loft beds are built at mid-height level. This can ease parent's fears of children being on such
high ground. The children can still experience the joys of having a bunk bed, with happy ladders and railing on the sides. As with most loft bunk beds, the area below is available for other purposes. Often low loft beds use the area below for storage. It comes equipped with drawers and cabinets which would certainly make moms happy. Moms will now have a good spot to hide all those toys and perfect drawers to keep fresh clothes neatly. Books and art supplies can also be conveniently stored. An awesome space-saver, the child's room isn't only clutter free but also has more elbow room to play, imagine and dream.

Children's Educational Toys Friday, October 8, 2010

Children's Educational Toys are those that combine playing with teaching and the child does not even know when one stopped and the other began. Playing with fun and learning with fun need not be two activities meant for separate times. Children exist in their own high energy zone and educational toys serve to generate, absorb and canalize this energy.

Super parents are always on the lookout for toys that hold the attention of their children and simultaneously help to enhance the learning abilities of their super kids while providing a lot of fun at the same time. One may easily concede that only a toy that succeeds in sustaining the ever wavering attention of a child can remain in the child's observational orbit for long enough to educate the child.

The spectrum or range of education with the help of toys cannot be limited. It has vast and endless possibilities. One never knows and can never correctly predict what excites the child's creative and imagination skills and to what extent. It can be a color, a texture a shape or even a sound. It can be a picture, a structure, a puzzle piece or just about anything. It is ultimately left to the creators of Educational Toys to come up with toys that are designed to bring forth, cultivate and hone the learning abilities of children, as undoubtedly, if 'we catch them young', this is where our Galileos and Einsteins are going to come from.

This is a time and era for multi tasking and children are the fastest learners provided their intellects are fed with the right visual and intellectual catalysts. With a generation of whiz kids looking at us for more and more for variety and challenges, childhood is an excellent time to introduce children to a variety of educational toys that not only tickle their imagination but also activate their creative tendencies.

Educational toys help encourage fundamental skills in children at the same time prepare them for school. Some educational toys encourage group activities. Building blocks are also an excellent tool for sculpting inborn and inherent talents. Most of all, educational Toys set a child thinking, and all the advancement and technology and wonders that one sees today are the result of the 'thinking of thinkers'.

However, creation of Educational Toys is no mean job and definitely not a small responsibility. Child Development Specialists put years of observation and learning and being with children to provide playtime learning toys for children that serve as a flashpoint for imagination, inspire creative skills and encourage learning in children.

Little Zen Minds has a diverse selection of children's educational toys, books, games, arts and crafts that focus on mental, physical and creative development of children.

Language Development Troubles Kids Face, and the Way Out Wednesday, October 6, 2010

It's a question every parent has - of all the kinds of input that children need to actually become great readers which are the most essential? There is a certain stage in a child's language development where she understands three things about reading. They are, the understanding that reading is for the meaning contained in words, that one needs to know the alphabet for this, and that one needs to quickly be able to read so that one is able to put the words they know together to form meaning. Some children start out at school with such complete language development that they have all these principles down pat. When a child doesn't come ready with this level of development though, parents and teachers together have to show the child that letters are actually small pieces of sound; that you need to put letters together to make the fluid evolving sound happen that is called a word, and how would mean something.

One important way a child will achieve this milestone in her language development is by being exposed to an environment where easily understandable language is available everywhere. Parents keep hearing this buzzword about a "language-rich environment", and are often never really told what exactly that is. Your home is a language rich environment if there are all kinds of ways there in which the printed word can be used and shown to a child in a playful and happy way she can understand. A good way to help a child gain from a language-rich environment would be to ask the child questions about things being read to her. For instance, once you've finished reading her her story, you can ask open-ended questions that would require her to really mind whenever she heard. Instead of asking specific questions like"How long was Rapunzel's hair?", you can ask her question like, "Did Rapunzel really love the Prince?".

Children who have trouble with the reading part of their language development To help with this, they could try to pick out words written around them, in the most unexpected times and places. What the letters on a cookie say for instance, could be of especial interest. The lettering on a child's toy that declares its brand, value and quality could be of special interest.

Most children would have their language development benefit greatly if they are exposed to these principles as early as at two years old. Labeling all the items they use at home, writing the names of their friends and siblings on a poster on the wall, among other things, will really help. And in the end of course, talking helps like nothing else can. Children who have parents who talk to them about all kinds of things, not just kids' stuff, seldom have obstacles presented to them in their language development.

Compare a Sleep Number Bed Saturday, October 2, 2010

If sleeping is a problem for you then maybe it is time for you to purchase a new bed or mattress. One thing that you can do is to compare sleep number bed with other different styles of beds. Not getting enough sleep or a proper night's sleep can affect your performance throughout the day and it could cause problems with your health as well.

You may have seen commercials on television promoting the various beds available on the market. To compare a sleep number bed with any other style of bed requires you to do some research and information gathering. The sleep number bed allows you to adjust the firmness to the level you want while other types of beds do not have this feature. There are many different options available when it comes to the type of mattress on the market. You can find mattresses that are made from memory foam, coils and springs or even water or air.

Every company that promotes their mattress or bed will say that theirs is the best. It is up to you the consumer to determine what is best for you within your budget. One of the best ways to compare sleep number bed with another type of bed is to actually try them out yourself. Some retailers will allow you to test their mattresses in the store, while others will let you take one home for a period of thirty days for example to properly test it out under normal sleep conditions.

A great place to gather information while you compare sleep number bed against other types of beds is to browse the online forums and consumer reviews on beds and mattresses. You will not find a mattress that is one hundred percent popular. People have their own opinions so just be careful when considering peoples opinions online. Another important point to research is the warranty that the manufacturer offers. A good company will stand behind their product. If price is a factor for you, keep an eye out for sales or discounts offered at the local retailers or warehouse outlets. Good luck on your research and hopefully your new mattress will provide a much better nights sleep.
