Organizing Your Baby's Closet Wednesday, June 30, 2010

When you have a baby, you inevitably have a lot of stuff to organize. It is important to make the most of your nursery closet space, even if you don't have a big closet to work with. Maximizing the use of closet spaces that are normally ignored will help you to efficiently store all of your baby's equipment and clothing.

Because baby things are generally small, you will most likely need to install a closet organizer or you'll be wasting space. You can install wire rack shelving fairly easily, with little equipment, and for just a little money. You could use short shelves, cabinets or a small dresser on the floor if you don't want to install shelving or an elaborate closet system.

Use the space on the back of the closet door. A shoe organizer is handy for keeping all of those baby shoes straight. One with pockets may work better than one with wide pegs because the pegs are generally too large for tiny shoes. Pockets are handy for storing other things, too, like socks, mittens, hats, gloves, and even medical supplies that you want to keep out of reach. You can also install a hat organizer and use it for diaper bags, backpacks, emergency overnight bags, and other large hanging items. A hanging ribbon with clips makes a great place for hanging baby bows, head bands, barrettes and ponytail holders. You can even hang earrings and jewelry here to keep them up high out of baby's reach.

Making sure that everything has a specific place to go will help you to keep the nursery organized. Don't forget to maximize the space in the closet. The front corners of the closet are normally ignored, but make perfect places for corner shelves. Cubbies up and down the height of the closet make great places for keeping things like diapers, wipes, bags, blankets, sheets, towels, and cloth diapers. Baskets can be put in the cubby spaces for keeping smaller items organized. This is handy for keeping medications and other hazardous items up high and inaccessible.

Babies usually end up with a lot of clothes. Not only can they go through several outfits a day, but you may have more than that. They could have a lot of hand-me-down outfits and other clothing that they haven't grown into yet. Hang outfits on infant hangers with clips so that you don't have to sift through mountains of clothes to find the parts that go together. Baby hangers and children's hangers are a lot smaller than standard ones. They won't stretch the clothes or take up more space than is necessary.

Mount Tallac - A Challenging Day Trek in California Tuesday, June 29, 2010

A jaunt up Mount Tallac located near Lake Tahoe in California is one of the prime examples of a solid challenging day trek that people should have a go at more often.

Mount Tallac towers to a height of 9735 feet above Lake Tahoe in California's Desolation Wilderness. It is reached via State Route 89 and is both a winter and a summer recreation area. It is usually snow covered in the winter and the winter ascent to the summit is quite a bit different than the summer paths. For the purposes of this article, we will assume you are planning to tackle it in the summer.

Despite the fact that it is located in a region know as the Desolation Wilderness, Mount Tallac is anything but isolated. There are many very well appointed recreational facilities and places to sleep and eat in the Lake Tahoe area. In fact, even those that try this in the summer are not going to feel either desolated or even isolated. You are almost certain to encounter fellow mountaineers on the trip up the Mountain. One of the reasons for this is the fact that the trail is challenging, but can be done in a day. This, of course, makes it a perfect weekend escape for many in California.

Fairly easy might be going a bit far, however. The trail is about 5 miles to the top and has an average grade of about 12%. Since the trailheads are already at about 6500 feet of elevation, the climb covers about 3235 feet of elevation increase over the five miles. This is not so difficult as to scare off even the average person, but it also does not have a lot of flat areas either. The best part of the effort is the amazing panoramic views, not just from the summit, which is awesome, but all the way up as well.

The two main summer trailheads both begin around Fallen Leaf Lake, one of many lakes in the region. The first takes a long right traverse course up the Mountain. It is the shorter of the two trails, but it has virtually no shade. This is a definite disadvantage in the summer. The second trail is longer, but has plenty of shade and the more scenic views. It passes by Lake Gilmore which has swimming areas. Obviously, the second route is preferred by most people unless their primary interest is getting to the top as quickly as possible.

Mount Tallac, pronounced Tuh-LAK, is truly an example of the merging of mountaineering and trekking. Although it does not require rock climbing, nor does it present any real danger and can be climbed by younger kids, it does involve a major exertion to the top of a mountain. The 12% average grade means it is not for those who are not in relatively good condition, but for those able to handle it, the rewards are well worth the effort. The views both during the climb and from the summit are breathtaking, and a camera might be the most important gear for this mountaineering challenge.

Dedicated to Sadako Sasaki.. (For those who understand) Pinokiofromtokio. Letter From Sadako's Mother Come Back to Me Again, Sadako A Letter from Sadako's Mother, Fujiko Sasaki No one is lovelier for a mother than the most miserable child. I have four children and I feel very sorry about Sadako most. Already eight months have passed since Sadako died. She was really a miserable child. When she was born during the war, there was not enough food and she weighed only 2250 grams, but she was fine except when she got pneumonia when my husband was drafted. You may laugh at me if I praise her (Translator's note: it is not Japanese custom to praise your family in front of others;), but she was so considerate and thoughtful that I relied on her. She helped me a lot in every possible way. When I can't go to sleep, I often remember my child who got worn out and died and wish I could hug her to my heart's content only once more. In my dream, Sadako says to me, "Leave it to me, mom" and I wake up calling, "Sadako!" Then I realize it was a dream and I wonder how she is. For a while, I'm lost in my sad thoughts and join my hands in prayer before the tablet of the deceased. I remember January 9th last year. She showed me a lymph node behind her ear saying "Mom, I think that my lymphatic glands were swollen a little." I thought it. But when she had a check up at ABCC(Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission) in June, 1954, she was told that she was fine, and she was really vigorous and everyone ...

Safety Tips For the Solo Backpacker Wednesday, June 16, 2010

The peace, quiet, and serenity of a solo backpacking trip is hard to beat. It's just you and the wilderness as the trail flows by under your feet. You make all the decisions, when to stop, where to camp, and how fast you want to hike. It is truly a unique experience that anyone who backpacks should enjoy at least once.

As a solo backpacker you also need to be aware that you are more vulnerable because you are out there on your own. You are in a more dangerous position simply because you are alone with nobody to help you if something does happen. For this reason you need to take steps to make your trek into the wilderness safer.

Here are 7 Solo Backpacking Tips

1. Always tell someone where you are going, when you are going, and when you plan to return. Leave a map with them showing your planned route along with the dates of your trip.

2. Bring your cell phone. Turn it off to save the battery and put it in your pack. If you need it you'll have it. Cell coverage is pretty much non-existent in the wild but it may just save your life.

3. Double check your emergency/safety items and make sure they are in your pack. First aid kit, water-proof matches, iodine tablets, emergency blanket, whistle, mirror, etc all need to make the trip with you.

4. Match your route to your abilities. If you have a bad knee or some other issue stick to well traveled trails where you stand a better chance of seeing other hikers and backpackers.

5. Learn to read a map and how to use a compass. Knowing where you are and the way out is vitally important, even when you take a side hike off your main route.

6. Stay within your abilities. Don't plane to hike 20 miles per day if you've never done that before. In fact you should plan to set your expectations a little below what you would do if you were backpacking with a group.

7. You will need to lighten your load. Because you are no longer sharing the load for all your equipment like a tent, cooking gear, and other items you need to make sure you do not overload your pack. Read up on lightweight backpacking and go through your equipment list carefully.

There is more risk associated with solo backpacking but the rewards of a well planned trip can make it well worth it.

If lightweight backpacking is your thing then consider a Marmot sleeping bag. Marmot is well known as a quality backpacking equipment company and designs and constructs some of the lightest yet warmest bags on the market today. To learn more Click Here.

Nighttime is Tricky Friday, June 11, 2010

I don't know how it started again, but I'm sneaking back into the house after a night out. Just like a rebel teen, I quietly unlock the door and slip off my shoes so as not to wake anyone. I'm not proud of this. I do however realize that now that there's a baby sleeping in the house I'm whispering again and closing my bedroom door. I'm conscious of what time my phone is ringing and telling my friends to speak softly when it's late. Instead of feeling shorted I remember and romanticize the similarities of living at home when I was a teen and living at home now with small children.

When I was a teen I had a very full extracurricular life. Somehow I always had a friend to rescue or an event scheduled past my curfew hour. To coordinate these affairs it takes a ninja like determination to slip in and out of the house.

The window of time where you are not responsible to someone is really short when you become a parent. Think about it. Your entire childhood was full of opportunities to get in trouble. Or at least be responsible for explanations if something broke or was missing.

Then, hopefully you lived away from home at some point. The window was cracked open just enough to let a good sliver of light pass through. And it feels good. You're making new shadows on walls no one will ever discover. No one to answer to if something breaks. No one can chew you out but yourself when the phone bill comes. You can spend your grocery money on shoes if you like. You don't even have to feel someone else's angst if you live by yourself. But you realize that you are responsible to and for yourself.

I am a parent now. The sitter is here. The choice to be in adult environments as opposed to being asleep in my bed has been made. No coughs, grade school projects, or dishes require my attention. So...quickly, get cute. Grab keys and slip out while you can. Then hurry home to enjoy a little of that good old peace and quite that only exist when babes are sleeping.

I don't know how it started again, but now I'm sneaking back into my house after a night out and getting in trouble for things. It was me who gave the juice box that ended up on the floor, sandwiched between the bed frame and the wall. There it landed in the corner. Drop after sticky drop filled the most delicious pool for ants. Spiritedly, they organized a march from the exterior world, through a strip of old seventies molding, right across the underside of my son's pillow then down to reach the hot spot. I discovered my mess before caffeine or shower on the way to my morning kiss. I leaned forward to greet the warm soft cheeks of my son's face and saw a black spec move in the peripheral My mama senses were acute to suspicion even though my body was barely awake. Hardly dressed for weight training, I lift him up to reveal the line of horror. Who brought this on? Should I scold the boy who drunkenly let his juice fall out of sight? Or take the blame and outlaw juice boxes forever? I'm the adult. I guess I'm busted again.

There is something really beautiful and funny about the challenge it is to get out or away from the job of being someone's parent. By the time I have time to reflect on it, I'm sure these nights will be some of the best memories in my catalog.

These bags have a sleeve on the bottom into which you can slide in. You feel comfortably warmer and can enjoy a good sleep whether you are at home or somewhere far in the jungle. The different types of sleeping bags they offer are the classic sleeping bags, superlight mummy bags, women's sleeping bags, couples, and children's sleeping bags. These bags are available in smaller pack sizes and have sleeping pads also in them.

The sleeping pads can be bought separately or along with the sleeping bags. Some bags have in-built bags which maintain the warmth and comfort while you sleep. Big Agnes offers air chamber pads, self-inflating, memory foam, and lightweight pads. These are made of foam or nylon fabrics making it smooth and gentle on your skin.

The tents come in different varieties like 3-Season Tents, 4-Season Tents, Ultralight Tents, Superlight Tents, Backpacking Tents, Mountaineering Tents, and Solo Tents. The Ultralight tents are made of extremely lightweight materials and have lots of space inside. Thought lightweight, the materials are tested and are found to last long in the extreme weathers also. The backpacking tents can be folded to the maximum and carried as a backpack when not in use. The mountaineering tents are built to resist high speed wind currents and the frames are made of rust proof, strong materials.
